Trick or Treating in Historic Downtown Cochrane” returns with 27 local businesses joining in to hand out sweets and celebrate community spirit.

Halloween is fast approaching, and a fairly new tradition is quickly becoming a Cochrane favourite — the annual Trick or Treating in Historic Downtown Cochrane.
It all began in 2022 when Quirk Social moved into its new office along Historic Downtown. During that time, CEO Kailey Mitchell wanted to find a fun way to connect with the community during the spooky season.
“I always liked Halloween events in Cochrane and thought Trick or Treating was a fun way to get people engaged in coming into what at the time was a new space for us,” Mitchell explained. “We were upstairs of McKay’s, so we figured maybe if we could get other businesses to participate, it would bring more people through everyone’s doors.”
The idea caught on, and each year since, families have flocked downtown in costume, collecting goodies from shop to shop.
“It’s exciting to see people’s outfits and everybody walking down the street happy to run into each other,” said Mitchell. “People pop into stores, see familiar faces, or check out spots they haven’t visited before — it’s always very happy vibes downtown.”
This year’s event will be the biggest yet, with 27 participating businesses ready to welcome trick-or-treaters and fill their bags to the brim.
Some of the stops include local favourites like MacKay’s Ice Cream, Fence & Post, Found Books & Shop, and Horse Creek Candy and Gifts.
“We’ve got so many locally owned businesses by people who live in the community themselves and like to give back,” said Mitchell. “The small business world in Cochrane is definitely community focused.”
Trick or Treating in Historic Downtown takes place on October 31, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., giving families plenty of time to explore and enjoy the festivities before the night’s spookier adventures begin.
