Amid rising tariff tensions between Canada and the United States, local business owner Kailey Mitchell of The Social Spot in Cochrane is urging residents to support local.
“We’ve seen a lot of push on supporting local, you know, trying to get people to get out and support those in the community,” Mitchell said. “Cochrane has seen businesses open and close over the years, and this is a great opportunity to back Alberta makers all in one place.”
Mitchell, who recently expanded her store to nearly triple the number of vendors in a grand re-opening celebration over the weekend, emphasized that shopping locally means directly supporting neighbours and local producers.
“When you support local, you’re supporting people in your own community,” she explained. “It’s easy to get caught up in low prices at big chains, but when you shop at downtown stores, local pharmacies, or even the butcher shop, you’re investing in your neighbours and Alberta farms right here in Cochrane.”
Highlighting the store’s commitment to local goods, Mitchell noted, “Almost everything we offer is Canadian or Alberta made. We do have a couple of vendors who design locally and manufacture overseas, but we always ensure they meet our standards. Otherwise, we’re all about supporting local businesses, even one vendor from Saskatchewan fits into that vision.”
Mitchell also pointed out that many local ventures, from handmade candles and bath products to a new line of peanut butter made right here in Cochrane, have the potential to grow into full-time businesses if given the community’s support.
“Every dollar counts,” she said. “Small businesses feel each dollar much more than big chains, so when you buy local, you’re really making a difference.”
As the tariff dispute continues to affect trade, Mitchell believes that now is the time for Cochrane residents to invest in their community.
“It’s about celebrating local talent and keeping our economy strong during challenging times,” she added.
For Mitchell, supporting local isn’t just a business strategy, it’s a way to ensure Cochrane’s future remains vibrant and resilient.
